Abstract

This editorial introduces the inaugural issue of the Journal of Trust Studies (JOTS), an academic forum dedicated to exploring the multifaceted concept of trust within societal contexts. Trust is identified as a foundational element crucial for social cohesion, as emphasized by Simmel's assertion that society would disintegrate without mutual trust. The editorial discusses the erosion of trust in modern society, attributing significant responsibility to political leaders and institutions for this decline. The impact of distrust has permeated various levels of social interaction, from businesses to interpersonal relationships, exacerbated by historical events such as the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights how distrust leads to skepticism and fractures the foundational structures supporting democracy, commerce, and social relations. The role of trust in governance, economic stability, and social cohesion is underscored through historical and contemporary scholarly works, emphasizing its importance for human progress. The editorial concludes by addressing the urgent need to restore trust in public institutions, arguing that rebuilding trust requires commitment to integrity, reliability, and benevolence. As JOTS launches, its mission is to inspire dialogue and research on trust, aiming to foster a deeper understanding and restoration of trust in society.
